April 2008

Dear Families,

Thank you for your support throughout MCA testing.  With your support, the testing process went very smoothly, with far fewer students needing to make up tests due to absences and tardiness.

Construction on our new office will begin Monday, May 19.  The office staff will be relocating to the library during construction, with the office move date set for Thursday, May 15.  For safety during construction, the main doors to Webster will be locked and barricaded.  Students and families will enter through the doors off the small parking lot just down the sidewalk from the main entry.  Extra staff will be outside the first few days to help with this transition.  Our new office will be ready for the start of the new school year.  We look forward to serving you in a more welcoming and inviting office!

Sincerely,
Lori Simon, Principal

New Pre-Kindergarten Program

Academic Service Learning Projects
Webster will be implementing service learning school-wide next school year.  Service learning helps students become more engaged learners, classmates, and citizens, and can help them make a valuable contribution to their communities.  Service learning gives students an opportunity to study their community, select an issue they think needs to be addressed in their community, then partner with the community in a project to bring about a change or a solution.  All of the work students incorporate into the project will be tier to the state standards at their grade level.  Recently, staff met to begin planning projects for next school year:
  • Kindergarten - Friendships across Generations working with the Elderly Community
  • 1st Grade - Risk Watch: Making our Home and Community Safe Program
  • 2nd Grade - School Entrance Beautification
  • 3rd Grade - Democratic Process: Voter Awareness and Animal Abuse Awareness
  • 4th Grade - Establish Cross-generational Relationships between Active and Retired Military Veterans
  • 5th Grade - Water Quality and Conservation
  • 6th Grade - Create Books for Children's Hospital
  • Support Staff - Holiday Gifts for Families in Need
  • Learning Center - Informational Video about the Learning Center

Reading Tip of the Month!!!
Nothing is more important to academic achievement than being a good reader. Parents know their children best and can provide the one-on-one time and attention that will lead them to success in reading. Here is our tip of the month:

Show enthusiasm for your children's reading

Your reaction has a great influence on how hard they will try to become good readers.  Be sure to give them genuine praise for their efforts.

Reading Corps Coming to Webster
Webster has been selected as a Minnesota Reading Corps site for the 2008-2009 school year.  Reading Corps staff work with kindergarten through third students in support of reading fluency.  Webster has been allocated two literacy coordinator positions.  Staff earn $860 per month (FT), or $430 (PT), AND an education award of $4725 to use towards college education.  Applicants must have a high school diploma.  Positions start in August.  If you or someone you know is interested in joining us in a position of literacy coordinator in this capacity, please apply at www.theMLC.org/ReadingCorps.

Reminder from Nutrition Services
On May 19, 2008, students must have cash or credit in his/her account to receive a meal.  Students eligible for free have credits on their account.  There is no charging the last 2 weeks of school.  Please clear up any negative balance.  If you have any questions, please contact the Nutrition Services Supervisor, Bev M., at 651-293-8625 x4525.

Important Buss Safety Reminder
Riding the school bus to and from school is a privilege and not a right.  Choosing not to follow bus safety rules not only endangers everyone's safety, but may lead to a suspension from riding the bus.  Please remind your students daily to be a safe bus rider and to follow the rules.  We want all of our students to enjoy a safe ride to and from Webster!
