| Learn About Webster ... | | Webster Elementary School is the Service-Learning Magnet located in the heart of the Saint Paul Public Schools district (see map). We are dedicated to being "a school community educating and enriching all children to live in an ever-changing world."
As our mission states, the first goal of our school community is to "educate" all of our children. We do this by focusing on the core curriculum they need to succeed in this "ever-changing world." We are also committed to "enriching" our children's educational experience. This is accomplished through our enrichment program where students have the valuable opportunity to expand their academic horizons beyond the typical elementary school offerings and/or to spend their time sharpening basic skills ... depending upon their individual needs.
In addition to our basic skills and the enrichment program, Webster nurtures the special talents of each individual child through the Webster Learning Center, our program for English Language Learners, and the Special Education services. Webster works to ensure that our children are not left behind nor are they ever held back from achieving their full potential.

... six all day kindergartens; five to six core homerooms at each grade level, from 1st through 6th, covering the essential curriculum with special emphasis on reading, writing and math: Children are assigned their basic skills teacher who instructs them for 2/3 of the school day in reading, literacy, math, social studies, and health. Each homeroom is heterogeneous balanced, by grade, gender, racially, and skill levels. This enables Webster to address the full range of learning styles and academic abilities, such as for our ELL students or our gifted small cluster groups, to support every child's academic, cognitive, and social-emotional needs.

Demographics today ...
Webster Magnet is proud of its enrichment model which has brought academic success to children who represent the diversity of our community. Webster is located in the heart of Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, in Saint Paul Public Schools District #625 and presently serves approximately 900 students in all-day kindergarten through sixth grade. City-wide busing has enabled children to attend Webster continuously even if their families move around. Webster parents have been given a voice in their children's education through participation in the school's Site Council. Our parents are also involved in other ways such as as classroom volunteers as well as in our general PTO, Hmong PTO, African American Parent Involvement Team, and the Challenger Gifted/Talent Parent Support Team. Over 2/3 of Webster's 150 staff members are licensed teachers, 2/3 of whom have advanced degrees. Our surrounding multi-cultural neighborhood serves children from a broad social-economic spectrum. Approximately 2/3 of our students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch, 1/5 are ELL learners, 1/3 are receiving Gifted/Talented or Special Ed services, and the racial-ethnic distribution of Webster students during the 2002-2003 school year is as follows:
56% African American 20% European American 20% Asian American 3% Hispanic 1% Native American

Long history ...
Webster Elementary Magnet opened in 1976 as the first magnet school west of the Mississippi River. At that time, the student body was primarily African American children. The goal of the magnet school program was to desegregate schools on a voluntary basis. Children of diverse backgrounds were bused city-wide to participate in Webster's attractive new enrichment program. Students were given the opportunity to explore their many talents in a variety of courses and to excel in basic skills. Many children participated in above-grade-level programs for gifted students. Webster, the Enrichment Magnet, has proven itself again and again over 25 years; our enrichment model and our commitment to continual improvement is as strong as ever.

Mission ...
Webster Elementary is a social microcosm, and its diversity, in every sense of the word, is its strength: enrichment variety, ethnicity, student academic levels and socio-economics. By providing its students with the opportunity to respectfully learn and work together, Webster is most definitely "a school community educating and enriching all children to live in an ever-changing world."
