According to Isabel Beck, in a book called Bringing Words to Life, Tier 2 words are the best words to teach students, because they are the most useful words in the language, usually found in many places, and often have multiple meanings. These are words the student wouldn't normally know automatically (Tier 1 words).
Examples of Tier 2 words are found in almost any read-aloud book or chapter book. It is best to talk about words like these as you are reading with your child, and talk about what they mean in the context of the book or story.
