Vocabulary Building vocabulary and learning the meaning of important words and word parts such as prefixes, suffiexes, and root words. |
Fluency Student learn the importance of readying smoothly, like talking, using good expression and phrasing, at an appropriate pace. They practice using the punctuation, such as pausing at commas and stopping at periods, even if they are in the middle of a line of print. |
Phonics and Word Study Students learn how to use letter sounds and work parts (chunks) to read new words. They also learn any needed sight words or high frequency words to become more fluent readers. |
Phonemic Awareness Younger students (Kindergarten and 1st grade) need to learn how to rhyme, manipulate and play with sounds in order to become successful readers. Blending sounds into words, and segmenting sounds into their parts. |
