| | | | | Ms. Roger's Science | | Kindergarten students are introduced to common land and water animals. Students observe the animal over time. This gives students opportunities to compare and contrast the pairs of animals.
In first grade science, students learn about health. Students learn the importance of washing their hands and brushing their teeth. Students learn that germs can make them sick. They learn about good nutrition, healthy food choices, and exercise.
The second grade students learn about insects through observations. They watch insects progress through their life-cycles. Second graders learn about the physical needs of certain insects. Students learn that some insects depend on plants for their food and shelter.
Working with insects, third grade students learn about the diversity of animals. Students observe various insects, record their observations, and ask questions. Students observe life-cycles of insects, and compare the stages of metamorphosis. Third graders learn that changes in habitats can affect insect populations and certain insects depend on specific plants for their survival.
Forth grade students investigate the properties of water. They explore water through various experiments. Students learn about changes in water, interactions between water and different materials, and how humans use water. They learn that water is a precious resource.
In science, fifth grade students study insect ecology. Students rear insects, and learn about insect anatomy. Students learn about life-cycles, and complete and incomplete metamorphosis. Students compare and contrast living insects, and record their observations in a science journal.
Sixth grade takes a look at climate change. We discuss how our planet has been impacted by man since the Industrial Revolution. We look at how climate change is affecting various parts of the world. Sixth graders discuss what they and their families can do to reduce their carbon footprint. Students view demonstrations, do hands-on experiments, and keep a science journal.
