Ms. Petersen's Art Room
In art we will work to develop our "visual literacy," that is, we will learn how to use the elements and principles of art to visually communicate an idea through experimentation with various materials and artistic processes. We will look and talk about artwork created by artists around the world, as well as our own, for inspiration.

Some projects we'll be creating this year are:
  • Grade 1: Still Life Tempera Paintings inspired by the artwork of Van Gogh, Clay Animals, Symmetrical Cut Paper Designs, Shape Animal Collages, Self Portraits in Watercolor

  • Grade 2: Clay Rattles, Quilt Square Collages inspired by the art of Faith Ringgold, Stencil Designs, Line Paintings with Watercolor, Tempera Landscapes

  • Grade 3: Dream City Collage, Nonobjective Shape Paintings, Mata Ortiz Coil Pottery, Sun Faces, Balance of Symmetry Desgins, Animal Life Drawings

  • Grade 4: Effigy Vessels in Clay, Abstract Figure Collages inspired by Picasso, Contour Drawing of the Shoe, Pastels inspired by the art of Georgia O'Keefe, Art of the Harlem Renaissance
Projects in the art room are interdisciplinary.  On an average day, concepts from math to music are incorporated into the curriculum.  For example, in grade 3 students use their knowledge of symmetry to create complex designs, while in grade four students use their skills in measurement to draw figures realistically.

In addition, students at Webster have access to a wide range of high quality art materials.  Students create at least one project in clay each year, and also have access to materials such as:
  • paint: tempera, watercolor, acrylic
  • dry media: charcoal, chalk and oil pastels, art markers
  • sculptural mixed media materials
