Dear Families,

Greetings. My name is Robert Miller and I have been assigned the Interim Principal for Webster Magnet School until a permanent principal is selected and approved by the Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education. An Interview Committee is to be formed through Webster School Site Council, to help select the new Principal of Webster Magnet School. This process should be completed as soon as possible so next year's planning will be implemented in the fall.

Mr. Litwin has been reassigned as Principal of Horace Mann Elementary School and started his duties there on Tuesday, February 27, 2007. We all wish him well in his new assignment.

As Interim Principal, I will try to make these transitions as smooth as possible. Please feel free to call me or visit me if you have concerns or ideas to implement the changes and developments for quality programs for children at Webster Magnet School.

Sincerely,
Bob Miller, Acting-Principal

Next Strategic Task Force Meeting
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 6, at 6:00 p.m. in the library. Staff and families are invited to participate. At this meeting, we are going to discuss changes to the school for next year. We will discuss what enrichment specialists are a top priority for next year. It is likely that we will only be able to maintain six specialists. The changes also include two options. One is to re-divide the school into two smaller learning communities. The other is to begin looping classrooms next year.

Take Your Child to Work Day
Because the last week of April is a critical time for both students and schools due to statewide testing, Saint Paul Public Schools is not participating this year in Take Your Daughters & Sons to Work Day on Thursday, April 26. We would encourage you to send your child to school on April 26. As an alternative, if you can arrange with your employer to have your child visit the workplaces on a non-school day or during the summer, that would be great! If you feel it is critical that your child participate in the Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 26, which is an early release day, please consider taking your child at 12:35 p.m. when school has dismissed for the day. For students who do not attend school all day because of the event, the absence will be considered excused provided students have a note from their parents indicating that they are participating in the event.

Webster Students Have Spirit
Students can show their Webster pride by dressing up for Webster Spirit Days.

"Pick a Peck of Picture Books"
Picture Books and Their Authors: The 2006-2007 Saint Paul Reads
Citywide Book Club's Recommended Books for Younger Readers
March 25, Sunday, 2:00 p.m., FREE

In cooperation with Saint Paul Public Schools, The Red Balloon Bookshop is excited to welcome five of our author friends whose picture books were chosen as recommended books for younger readers for the 2006-2007 Saint paul Reads Citywide Book Club. All o f the books selected for the 2006-2007 club were written by Minnesota authors; a theme chosen to commemorate the school district's 150th anniversary. We're happy to note that Minnesotan s also illustrated several of these picture books.

Each of the five authors will give short presentations and be available to autograph books after the presentations. Meeting authors and getting signed copies of their books are great ways to inspire kids to read.

Featured today are:
  • Debra Frasier, author-illustrator of On the Day You Were Born
  • David LaRochelle, author of The Best Pet of All
  • Marybeth Lorbiecki, author of Children of Vietnam
  • Phyllis Root, author of If You Want to See a Caribou (illustrated by Minnesotan Jim Meyer)
  • Joyce Sidman, poet and author of Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems (illustrated by Minnesotan Beckie Prange)
This is the sixth year of the Saint Paul Reads Citywide Book Club. Since the project began, students in Saint Paul Public Schools have red more than 10 million books. For more information: www.saintpaulreads.org.

March Book of the Month
Just Like Josh Gibson by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Beth Peck. Josh Gibson, one of the greatest home run hitters to never make the majors, is the focus of this girl-empowering baseball story. Grandmama tells a tale of how she saved the day with a hit, "just like Josh Gibson," her hero. Readers can't help but identify with the heroine when she joyfully participates in the sport she loves.

INTRODUCING SCHOOL MESSENGER!
Beginning in March 2007 Nutrition Services will be launching School Messenger, a new automated system that will notify you of your child's low or negative meal account balance. You will be notified by receiving a voice mail message at the primary phone number for your household. A household with more than one child will only receive one call. Messages will be left between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

We've heard that you liked getting the balances from our old online system and thought this would facilitate getting you the information you need. Balances can also be obtained through the Parent Portal website at www.splearns.org. Click on "Parent Portal". First time users will need to click on "If you do not have an Activation Key, click here". Please note that balances are delayed by 48 hours.

Your feedback is important, so please let us know what you think! You can email Nutrition Services at nutritionservices.office@spps.org or call us at (651) 603-4950.

Reading Volunteers
Webster is working to develop a program of volunteers to read with students. Our goal is to have many volunteers reading with students regularly. If you are available and interested, please email Eleanor Clemmons at eleanor.clemmons@spps.org or leave a voice mail at 651-293-8625, extension 1500.

Spring Picture Day
Students will be photographed on Wednesday, March 7. When Webster receives the portrait packages, they will be sent home with each student, it will also include portrait payment collection envelopes. If parent chooses to keep the package, they will return payment to student's teacher in the payment envelope. Otherwise, unwanted portrait package can be returned to the teacher.
