Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a healthy and happy winter break. I was doing some reading over the break. Did you know that 10 absences for your child can seriously impact their learning? When I read this article, I wondered how this might affect our students. So I looked at our test information. The results were surprising and concerning.
  • 47% of Webster students who missed less than 10 days of school passed the state MCA math test last year. Only 20% of the students who missed 10 or more days passed!

  • In reading, 55% of Webster students who missed less than 10 days passed the MCAs. Only 32% of the students who missed 10 or more days passed!
We are working very hard to do our best in school. I know you are doing the best for your children too. Since 10 absences or more in any school year for any reason can slow your child’s academic progress, let’s work together to make sure the children are at school!

Sincerely,
Jim Litwin, Principal

January Book of the Month
Violet's Music by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith. This is a jazzy story about an African-American girl who loves music. From the time she was a baby banging out rhythms with her rattle or a two-year-old making a horn to toot on or a kindergartner looking for other kids with the same passion, Violet played and sang, and hummed and thought about music all the time.

Winter Dress
We take the students out for recess each day unless the temperature or wind-chill reach unsafe levels. We use the National Weather Service wind-chill chart to decide. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing. If your family or a family you know needs help with winter clothing, please contact a counselor or the nurse. Here are some clothing tips:
  • Wear boots, hats, and gloves or mittens
  • Wear a winter coat
  • Wear several layers
  • Wear clothing like wool or polypropylene that insulate, shield, and breath
Need Help with Everyday Math
Trying to help your child with Everyday Math? Frustrated with the directions or the methods? Finding math different than when you were in school? Stop by Webster’s library and ask Mrs. Folden about the Math Resource books. The school has purchased a number of these hard-covered books for most grade levels. You can check one out to help you help your child at home!

Early Childhood Screening
If you have a child who is between the age of three and a half and five years of age, your child is eligible to go to Early Childhood Screening. Early Childhood Screening is a requirement for kindergarten that really needs to be done before kindergarten. This screening picks up on vision, hearing and learning concerns so they can be taken care of before your child enters kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening helps your child be more successful in school by giving them the support they need to succeed. If you have an eligible child, please contact the school nurse, Terri Lundquist, at 293-8625 ext. 1510. If you leave a voicemail message, please include your name and the name of your child who currently attends Webster. Thank you
