Dear Families,

We have a couple of wonderful family events this month. I am really looking forward to seeing you at Webster.

Monday, February 12 marks the 11th Annual National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID). We have some wonderful activities arranged for the day. You can have breakfast with your child. There will be some storytellers. Students are performing a play called Telling It Like It Is. There is a luncheon with a dynamic speaker named Kevin Farmer speaking about Powerful Parent Strategies for Closing the African American/Caucasian Student Achievement Gap. That luncehon is at Unity Church across the street. Most importantly, you can come and spend some time with your child in their classroom. You can participate in their learning activitiy and show them how important education is to you. Joseph Dulin, founder of NAAPID, said that “Every parent wants their child to have a better quality of life than they themselves had. It is the American dream, and for many African Americans, this dream has not been realized as a result of their child's failure in school. Education is the key to success and parents are educators' greatest allies."

We would also like to invite and welcome you to our Open House on Thursday, February 15 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Classrooms will be open. Student work will be displayed. Families of existing students are invited to come and see their students’ classroom and work. If you know of a family that is interested in Webster for next year, please invite them to visit. They can see the school and classrooms. Interested families are also invited to call the office and schedule a tour. We give tours on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. Please call 651-293-8625, extension 0, to schedule.

I look forward to seeing you at Webster in the coming weeks!

Sincerely,
Jim Litwin, Principal

Next Strategic Task Force Meeting
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the library. Staff and families are invited to participate. At this meeting, we are going to discuss changes to the school for next year. We will discuss what enrichment specialists are a top priority for next year. It is likely that we will only be able to maintain six specialists. The changes also include two options. One is to re-divide the school into two smaller learning communities. The other is to begin looping classrooms next year.

Absences Excused for Cold Only for Monday, February 5
There is a one-time excuse for your child’s absence on February 5, 2007. If you kept your child home because of the cold, their absence can be excused if you call it in to the attendance line at 651-293-8626 ext. 9000 or if you send a signed note with your child.

Junior High Applications are due February 23
All sixth grade students should get their Junior High application into their homeroom teacher by Friday, February 23. These applications will be turned in to the Student Placement Center prior to the District headline, February 28. Please contact Assistant Principal Monroe Walker with any questions or concerns: 651-293-8625, extension 1502.

Webster Students Have Spirit
Students can show their Webster pride by dressing up for Webster Spirit Days.
  • WE LOVE WEBSTER! Wednesday, February 14, 2007 -- Wear red, white or pink to show your Webster Spirit!
  • SPORTS DAY! Wednesday, February 28, 2007 -- Wear jerseys, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. from your own team or your favorite team.

February Book of the Month
Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Hudson Talbott. Jacqueline Woodson's story, both historical and deeply personal, is the story of a seven-year-old girl sold into slavery. She learns to sew and quilt symbols and pictures to lead slaves to freedom. Later, her daughter also stitches quilts that become "a Show Way" to guide captives escaping to freedom. Subsequent generations of women in this family stay connected through quilting, using needle and thread as a means of support and as a creative outlet.

Need Help with Everyday Math
Trying to help your child with Everyday Math? Frustrated with the directions or the methods? Finding math different than when you were in school? Stop by Webster’s library and ask Mrs. Folden about the Math Resource books. The school has purchased a number of these hard-covered books for most grade levels. You can check one out to help you help your child at home!

Saint Paul Wellness 2007
Children and young adults develop most of their attitudes about food from the grown-ups they are around. Saint Paul Public Schools adopted a wellness policy this year to encourages healthy attitudes and habits in school. Here are some ideas to be a good role model outside of school.
  • If you aren’t home when your kids arrive, have grab-and-go snacks ready. Put healthy portions in plastic baggies. Leave a note with directions to get the snack ready. Remind your child about food safety and handwashing.
  • Limit the candy, soft drinks, chips, and cookies you buy. It saves on arguments about snacks.
  • Telling kids “if you eat this, than you can have dessert” teaches children that treats are tastier and more attractive than healthy foods.
  • Encourage your child to try new foods, even if it’s just a bite.
  • Encourage your child to eat breakfast and lunch. There is growing research that children who eat breakfast do better in school. We do have free breakfast every day at Webster.
Reading Volunteers
Webster is working to develop a program of volunteers to read with students. Our goal is to have many volunteers reading with students regularly. If you are available and interested, please email Eleanor Clemmons at eleanor.clemmons@spps.org or leave a voicemail at 651-293-8625, extension 1500.
