Comprehension
Students learn the importance of thinking about and understanding what they read. Here are some research-based strategies that will help students better understand what they read:
  1. Activate Prior Knowledge
think about what you already know about the subject, to create interest and get you ready to read, or make personal connections to the book as you read

  2. Predict
guess what will happen, to create a purpose for reading, and to create interest while you read

  3. Question
ask important questions to create a focus while you read

  4. Clarify or Monitor Comprehension
if something doesn't make sense, stop and figure out the tricky word, or reread to better understand what the author is saying

  5. Summarize
retell the important details, theme or main ideas of a story to help synthesize, remember and connect to what you read

  6. Visualize
make a picture in your head, to help you see it and remember it better

  7. Make Inferences
make connections to understand what the author has not stated in writing, but is still an important message or idea
